University of Memphis ramping up online offerings (Memphis Commercial Appeal) Posted: 09 Mar 2010 10:00 PM PST Starting with the fall semester, the University of Memphis will nearly double the number of courses available online, remaining on the cutting edge of online education. The university will offer 18 new degree programs, including bachelor's degrees in philosophy, African-American studies, business administration and nursing, plus master's degrees in teaching, health administration and history. The new offerings will add to U of M's 22 courses of study already online. "We're right there on the forefront," said Vicki Murrell, assistant dean for Distance Education. "We have our feet firmly planted in this area." Several years ago, the U of M began its own program, in addition to the statewide Regents Online Degree Program, and has experienced hefty increases in the number of students. Between 2007 and 2008, enrollment for eCampus classes jumped by nearly 50 percent. Each semester, the program grows by "leaps and bounds," Murrell said. Some of the new courses will attract working people -- those who can't make it to the campus, such as nurses, health administrators, teachers and business people. Several hundred out-of-state students are enrolled in U of M online programs. And the quality is equal to on-campus classes, Murrell said. "That's written in stone," she said. "Every course is the same online as on the ground" with the same curriculum, she said. "There is no negotiating about that. "People are still suspicious of online, for-profit programs." The online program is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and degrees and transcripts are identical in substance and appearance to those earned by "on-ground" students. It does not appear that any agency or publication ranks online programs specifically. "Online is not different, in terms of content, from on-ground," said John R. Bourne, director of the Sloan Center for Online Education. "Online courses should be at least as good as the on-ground," he said. The cost to attend online at the U of M is about the same as on-campus enrollment, for up to six hours. Then the cost rises slightly beyond that. This semester, there are about 5,000 students enrolled in online classes, and about 1,300 of them exclusively online, Murrell said.
