Posted: 13 May 2010 11:42 AM PDT

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - 05/13/10) - American College of Education, which offers high quality, online master's degree in education programs, is offering special tuition grants for Teach for America corps members and alumni. All Teach for America teachers and alumni who apply to American College of Education are now eligible for a $500 reduction in the College's already affordably priced tuition rate. This unique benefit is one way the College recognizes the service Teach for America provides to the country's highest needs schools. The Teach for America tuition grant applies to all online masters in education degree programs offered at American College of Education.

Teach for America corps members make two year commitments to teaching in low-income communities to work toward solving educational inequity. After they complete their two years of service, many Teach for America alumni serve in leadership roles inside and outside of education with a goal of improving educational outcomes and career opportunities for low-income students. "Teach for America alumni work hard to establish themselves in leadership positions in education, and an online master's degree in education from American College of Education can help them get there faster," said Dr. Jeri Nowakowski, President of American College of Education. "In many ways," she observed, "the College's mission to significantly improve P-12 student performance by enhancing the teaching effectiveness and leadership skills of public school educators complements the mission of Teach for America, which is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting our nation's most promising future leaders in the effort."

The $500 tuition grant for corps members and alumni of Teach for America is effective immediately. Enrollment for the two June start date (7th and 26th) sessions is now open with an enrollment deadline the week before each start date. Students pursuing online master's degrees in education at American College of Education may choose from the following degrees: M.Ed. in Education Leadership, M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with ESL Specialization, M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with Bilingual Specialization, and the newly approved M.Ed. in Educational Technology. All courses are offered exclusively online.

Members selected for the tuition grants must meet admission criteria. The GRE is not required. For American College of Education enrollment information, call 1-800-280-0307 or visit the College's website at www.ace.edu/tfa.

LFCC Offers Early Childhood Education Degree

Posted: 12 May 2010 09:12 PM PDT

This new program is designed for individuals seeking employment involving the care and education of young children or to enhance skills for those currently employed in this field.

The four-semester Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education requires 67 credit hours and includes internship opportunities and the development of a professional portfolio during a culminating course. Classes include: language arts and reading methods for young children focusing on language acquisition; development and reading readiness; teaching art, music and movement; math, science and social studies concepts for young children; and early childhood programs and social change.

"I am so excited that LFCC has taken this step forward with the addition of this new degree program as well as updating the career studies certificate," said Lori Killough, instructor of education. "The certificate is an industry-recognized credential on its own, but now it flows directly into this new degree, giving child care professionals so much more opportunity for professional development."

Occupational opportunities for individuals with this credential include program teachers and teaching assistants, leaders, supervisors or directors in child development programs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Virginia Career View, the employment of child care workers is expected to increase nationally and in Virginia. In addition, the Virginia Department of Education and the Department of Social Services are endorsing higher standards of qualification to maintain state accreditation for child care facilities.
For more information, please contact Professor Killough at 540-868-7239 or lkillough@lfcc.edu. You may also learn more about the program online at www.lfcc.edu/eced.
