SAN DIEGO, May 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (NYSE:BPI - News), a provider of post-secondary education services focusing on higher access to higher education, announced today that Ashford University has a new online long-term care specialization in its Health and Human Services bachelor's degree program and a long-term care management specialization in its Health Care Administration and Health Care Studies bachelor's degree program.

The healthcare industry is generating much of the new job growth in the United States, and the country's aging demographic creates demand in careers serving the long-term care population. According to the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, the number of patients using paid long-term care services is expected to double to 27 million by 2050.

Dr. Alice Jacobs Vestergaard, Ashford University's program director for the College of Arts and Sciences, said the new long-term care specializations are "innovative" academic programs with "strong roots" augmented by the university's various health care-related programs.

"As the U.S. population needing long-term care continues to increase, our new specializations prepare people for work in institutional, community-based and public sector settings," she said. "These specializations are designed to introduce students to the full spectrum of long-term care settings and services to promote the maximum level of independence for people with functional limitations."

Although seniors make up the majority of the groups using long-term care services, younger people also require long-term care, such as physically- and mentally-challenged children, traumatic injury victims and adults diagnosed with AIDS and HIV.

Students who complete a long-term care specialization may pursue further studies and/or employment in fields such as aging services, gerontology, allied health careers, public sector and social service programs, adult daycare centers, assisted living facilities, continuing care communities, group care homes, acute care settings, home healthcare or health education.

"We designed the long-term care specializations with a holistic approach emphasizing appropriate use of technology, evidence-based practices, promotion of positive psycho-social dynamics and optimum quality of life for the long-term care population," Vestergaard, an internationally recognized author, educator and consultant in the field of aging and long-term care, said.

"There's no doubt the delivery and management of long-term care is undergoing an evolution," she added. "Technology is evolving which enables people to remain at home or in communal settings versus staying in the more costly acute care setting."

Ashford University's Bachelor of Arts in Health and Human Services with the long-term care specialization and the Bachelor of Arts in Health Care Administration and Bachelor of Arts in Health Care Studies with the long-term care management specialization are currently available online only. They do not include any additional professional licensures or certifications.

Jacksonville -

BOCA RATON, FL (MAY 7, 2010) – Test Drive College Online, a web-based service of EducationDynamics, announced today that military service members interested in online education can participate in a free, live webinar led by retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Michael Angley.  The webinar will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 from 2:00-3:00 PM EDT.  The exclusive webinar, "Online Education…Is it Right for Me?," will offer troops an opportunity to learn more about online education and the chance to discuss the challenges of balancing coursework with the responsibilities of military service. The webinar is sponsored by Test Drive College Online in collaboration with TogetherWeServed.com.

"When it comes to selecting a degree program, military service members struggle with the same questions civilian students have; however, they also face the possibility of deployment, relocation and the other obligations related to serving our country." said Todd Zipper, Senior Vice President of EducationDynamics and co-creator of Test Drive College Online.  "These special circumstances make choosing a program even more complicated and this webinar helps troops thinking about pursuing an online degree make a more informed decision."

During the webinar, Colonel Angley will discuss the benefits of online education as they specifically relate to active and former military.  Participants will gain a broad understanding of how online education works, the pros and cons of online learning, how to apply transfer credits and how online programs can provide the resources and flexibility necessary to help students achieve their goals.

Participants that decide to further explore online education will have the opportunity to take the Test Drive College Online College Competency Exam to see if they qualify to take a risk-free Test Drive College Online course.  The exam effectively gauges a student's aptitude through freshman-level English and math questions.  Students that pass are able to continue with the program and take a free Test Drive College Online course.  Currently, Introduction to Psychology and English Composition I are offered, which are courses many degree programs at most higher education institutions require.  The courses take five weeks to complete and about nine hours of study a week.    Test Drive College Online students are able to experience online education before they commit to a degree program and pay tuition.

The webinar is open to the public and completely free of charge, although admission is limited.  Registrations are being accepted at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/633567275.

Test Drive College Online is a revolutionary new program that allows qualified students the opportunity to "test drive" an online course at no cost and no obligation.  The American Council on Education (ACE) has evaluated and approved all courses, so students who pass a Test Drive College Online course can apply to transfer those credits to any ACE member school.  Test Drive College Online students are not only able to make an informed decision about whether online education is right for them, but they also receive a head start on their degree and a savings in tuition.  More information about Test Drive College Online is available at www.testdrivecollegeonline.com.
