(NYSE:BPI - News), a provider of post-secondary education services focused on providing higher access to higher education, announced today that Ashford University has introduced a Bachelor of Arts degree in Instructional Design. The new degree program was created to prepare students for the demands of education in an e-learning environment. E-learning is increasing in popularity across all industries. The percentage of college courses offered online or in an online/face-to-face hybrid continues to climb at a significant rate. According to the Sloan Consortium, the number of students nationwide taking at least one online course jumped from 1.6 million to 3.9 million between 2002 and 2007. For example, the state of Florida recently mandated that all school districts must provide some type of online leaning option for their students. Virtual high schools are becoming increasingly popular as students are no longer being limited by attendance zones and seat time requirements. "The College of Education at Ashford University is pleased to expand our program offerings to include programs that will prepare our students to address e-learning in the 21st century," said Dr. Joen Rottler, dean of Ashford's College of Education. "This B.A. program will support the preparation of professionals in fields such as learning and development, training, human resources and curriculum development. It is a timely expansion opportunity for our college." (NasdaqGS: STRA - News), for-profit education company, recently posted better-than-expected second-quarter 2010 results on the heels of robust student enrollments. The company earned a net profit of $35.7 million during the quarter, up 30% from the prior-year quarter.
The quarterly earnings of $2.60 per share outperformed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.56 and jumped 30% from $2.00 in the year-ago quarter. Strayer Education stated that total revenue for the quarter came in at $159.3 million, in line with the Zacks Consensus Revenue Estimate, but grew 26% from the prior-year quarter, buoyed by a rise in enrollment and a 5% increase in tuition fees, effective January 2010.
The educational institute, which offers degree programs in business administration, accounting, information technology, education, health care, public administration, and criminal justice, stated that total enrollment for the 2010 summer term jumped 23% to 52,221 students. Latinos, Blacks Help Fuel Growth of Online Education Posted: 30 Jul 2010 12:01 AM PDT The rapid growth of online school enrollment is heavily influenced by Latino and African-American students, two historically underrepresented groups in the traditional higher education community. While campus-based U.S. colleges and universities continue to shut out a majority of qualified non-Asian minority students, accredited online schools unequivocally extend an open door to all those who meet eligibility requirements. Santa Rosa, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2010 -- In spite of well-publicized transgressions by a handful of for-profit online schools, statistics indicate that online education continues its upward surge, far outpacing the growth rate of traditional colleges and universities. The significant growth of online school enrollment is heavily influenced by Latino and African-American students, two historically underrepresented groups in the traditional higher education community. While campus-based U.S. colleges and universities continue to shut out a majority of qualified non-Asian minority students, accredited online schools unequivocally extend an open door to those who meet eligibility requirements. An article by Dr. Courtney Vien, "Reaching Out to the Minority Working Learner", illuminates the specific hurdles that many Latinos and African-Americans face while navigating the higher education maze. These include poverty, being the first in a family to attend college, supporting a spouse or children while pursuing a college degree, racial discrimination, lack of information about college admissions, and graduating from substandard high schools without adequate college preparation. Cultural and language barriers only add to the mix. Blacks represent 6.7% of California's population, according to the U.S. census. Yet African-American students made up only 3% of incoming fall 2009 freshmen at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Latinos fared better at UCSD with a 15% enrollment - still less than half of their 36.6% representation in the general California population. This scenario is similarly played out in traditional schools across the nation. University of Phoenix, the largest university in North America, reports that 27.5% of its bachelor's degree students in 2008 were African-Americans and 15.7% were Latino. Accredited online schools, like UOP, specialize in seeking educational, scheduling and counseling solutions that accommodate minority applicants. These non-traditional schools successfully compete with traditional colleges and universities by utilizing basic foundational business principles: They offer a high quality education at competitive tuition rates -- along with concierge-type counseling, guidance and support services. DirectoryofSchools.com, a top provider of centralized online education information, makes it easier for all potential students to find the right online school for their budget and academic needs. The easy-to-navigate website includes listings of thousands of accredited online degrees, vocational programs, and other valuable information about studying online. And by simply filling out a form, potential students can receive a free packet of information directly from as many schools as they want. Reputable online schools will continue to draw an increasing number of Latino, African American and other students who require a seamless education fit to accommodate their busy work and family schedules.
