MACU to offer new degree program Posted: 31 Jul 2010 07:02 PM PDT Mid-Atlantic Christian University will begin classes this fall with a new degree completion program aimed at adult learners. The program — dubbed Vantage Point — has been created to address the struggles of non-traditional students. Vantage Point offers two degree options for students who either possess an associate's degree or meet the equivalent requirements. Ken Greene, vice president for enrollment management, said that over the last three years, MACU officials have seen a trend of close to 40 percent of the university's student population being made up of adult learners. He said that adults often face dramatic personal and professional changes in choosing to return or start school. "In order for them to achieve their dreams as far as continuing education, they were having to leave their careers or they were putting family life on hold to come back to school," Greene said. "This (program) gives them the opportunity to come back to school and to pursue their education in a night or an online format." Vantage Point currently offers bachelor of science degrees in family studies and organizational leadership. Both degrees offer minors in biblical studies, with the possibility of a minor in military science. Greene said that the goal of the program is to help adult learners to earn a bachelor's degree in no more than two years. In an interview last week, MACU President Clay Perkins said that the program stands to affect locals in a big way. "I'm just excited because these are degrees that can directly be offered to the people here in Elizabeth City," Perkins said. "These two degrees are definitely very, very local." For prospective students who do not possess an associate's degree, MACU will also consider students who are at least 23 years old or have five years of full-time professional work experience after high school. According to the university, students may also have completed at least 60 transferable semester credit hours from an accredited college or post-secondary institution, military service, credit by examination, or credit by demonstrated competency. According to information provided by the university, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or better on all prior academic work and prove basic computer proficiency.
