Minot State offers online Master's degree in special education

Posted: 21 Jul 2010 02:42 PM PDT

Beginning this fall, the Minot State University Department of Special Education and the Graduate School are offering a developmental disabilities/autism-spectrum disorders emphasis under the Master of Science degree in special education. Designed in an online format, the special education department tailored this DD/ASD master's degree emphasis for teachers, human resource professionals, allied health professionals and parents.

"MSU's new developmental disabilities/autism-spectrum disorders online option will help overcome the training limitations for professionals who live in rural areas and want to advance their scholarly understanding of DD/ASD," said Jennifer Hefter, instructor of special education. "The program also meets the needs of parents of children with developmental disabilities and autism-spectrum disorders."

The DD/ASD emphasis includes coursework in assessment, behavior management, program development and implementation, provisions of physical care and sensory issues, rehabilitative techniques, assistive technology, collaborative techniques, social training and use of various team-planning models. After demonstrating mastery of core competencies, students will participate in public schools or community-based agencies to fulfill a practicum component.

In addition to the online format, students have the opportunity to participate in two on-campus summer residencies. These two-day summer residencies will focus on assistive technology and assessment.

Program participants can complete the program in two years, depending on their individual program of study. The coursework complies with standards from the Council of Exceptional Children and incorporates evidence-based practices derived from the National Standards Report.

Online master’s students visit UNK for first time

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 11:32 AM PDT

KEARNEY — They had never stepped foot into a classroom or shook hands with their professors. They had never met the other students in their classes.

But, last week two University of Nebraska at Kearney eCampus students came to campus to experience the place that was providing their education.

John Stratton of Ankeny, Iowa, and Erick Wadsworth of Boise, Idaho, met with history professors and eCampus staff and toured the campus Friday.

"It hits home that this is their campus," said history professor Mark Ellis. "It's real. They can touch the buildings and meet the professors."

The students are enrolled in the history graduate program online, which started in January.

"There was a need. People that are place-bound needed a program to get their master's degree," Ellis said.

Before the online program, the master of history program had about eight students. Now, 150 students are enrolled in the program.

Ellis said students from at least 30 states and a student from Japan are taking classes in the program.

Stratton was one of the first students to enroll. He works as a seventh-grade American history teacher and began pursuing his master's degree because he hopes to teach at a college or university after his retirement.

"This type of program is good for people in my realm, someone who is working and looking for something to do from home," he said.

Wadsworth is a new student and will begin taking classes this fall.

"I was looking for a good school for someone nontraditional," Wadsworth said. He came upon UNK's master of history program after a Google search.

Wadsworth earned his bachelor's degree in family history from Brigham Young University, where he finished nearly 50 credits online.

Wadsworth works full time for a building materials center.

He said he enjoys history and is pursuing his degree for personal fulfillment.

Those interested in pursuing a master of arts in history must have a bachelor's degree with at least 18 hours of history courses.

Classes are offered both on campus and online. Students can take all classes online or take a blend of online and on-campus classes.

Courses offered include Civil Rights Movement; U.S. Military History; Environmental History; War, Memory and Film; Women's History; The Sixties; and Medieval England.

Ellis said very few online students visit campus.

"I wanted to see what was here. It's very impressive. At most larger universities you wouldn't be sitting here talking to your professors," Wadsworth said.

Stratton hopes to finish his degree by fall 2012. When Ellis asked if the students plan on attending graduation he joked, "Could we have an e-ceremony?"

"I would absolutely come. I wouldn't miss it," Wadsworth said.
