GetEducated.com is the only consumer group in the U.S. dedicated to helping students rate, rank, and compare accredited online colleges and universities. Twice a year, the distance learning experts provide financial aid through GetEducated's $1,000 Online College Scholarship program. Dayna Shong, 39, works as an inpatient coder at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and she will use the free distance learning scholarship to pursue a distance bachelor of science in health degree at Dakota State University. "I decided to take the most difficult class I could find to prove myself during my first semester. I studied harder than I ever have in my life," explains Shong. "To this day, this is my favorite class. I found studying about anatomy, physiology, procedures, and vocabulary fascinating. I was hooked from day one." Accreditation was the highest priority for Shong when choosing DSU to pursue higher education. The Health Information Administration program is fully accredited by the Regional Board for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Heather Ellison, 36, works as a restaurant manager in Rodney, Minnesota, while earning a master of business administration (MBA) at Baker College Online. She is also a winner of a GetEducated.com $1,000 distance learning scholarship award. Ellison is a single mother working 50+ hours a week, so distance learning became the only option for her to achieve a higher education. After working in the restaurant industry since she was sixteen, Ellison now values the importance of a college degree. She admits, "After a lot of self-examination, I realized that I really needed to make a change in my life and my career so that I can have a better quality of life for myself, and for my son." In the future, Ellison hopes to enroll in online graduate classes and work toward a Master of Health Services Administration. She wants to show her son that it is never too late to follow one's dreams and build the courage to actively pursue them. Rosa Morgan, 42, is a paraprofessional at Lebanon Middle School in Whitestown, Indiana. She will use the GetEducated.com free $1,000 online college scholarship toward an online Bachelors of Management at Indiana Wesleyan University. At ten years old, Morgan moved to America from the Cape Verde Islands, located off the coast of Africa. School was challenging for Morgan, as she was placed in bi-lingual immersion classes. Without any prior experience speaking English, she struggled to keep up with her studies. Now a single mother of four daughters, Morgan is motivated to excel in her studies and provide a bright future for her family. In 2006, she returned to school. In 2008, she graduated with an associate degree from Massasoit Community College in New York. Morgan explains "It is difficult at times, but I know that education is one of the most important things in life, so I am determined to achieve my goals." GetEducated.com will continue to offer free online college scholarships and grants to distance learning students in the spring and fall. Posted: 17 Dec 2010 08:30 AM PST NORCROSS, Ga., Dec. 17, 2010 – NORCROSS, Ga., Dec. 17, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Now there are more opportunities for active duty military personnel and veterans to maximize their education benefits by pursing a degree program with Ashworth College. Starting December 13, 2010, Ashworth (http://www.ashworthcollege.edu), a leader in online education began accepting Post 9/11 GI Bill education benefits. In addition to its more than 115 existing self-paced programs, Ashworth has launched two Associate Degree programs in its new Term Enrollment format – Criminal Justice and Business Management. With term learning, students are now able to pursue their degrees in standardized eight week cycles, which is compliant with Post 9/11 GI Bill guidelines. Over time, Ashworth plans to roll out this format among other degree programs. Like military students in Ashworth's self-paced programs, service members, veterans and dependents enrolled in a Term Enrollment program have access to all the same benefits and services including dedicated Military advisors, little to no out-of-pocket costs, the ability to pause studies if deployed, and credit for military and past work experience. "Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits provide significant advantages for the military family," said Melissa Maddox, Ashworth Military Education Coordinator. "It provides supplemental benefits should a service member deplete his or her regular tuition benefits. And they have the opportunity to transfer their benefits to a spouse or other dependants." Maddox also pointed out that many of Ashworth's programs lend themselves to the military lifestyle, including those in criminal justice, business, and computer technology. Training for military promotion points and for civilian transition Distance Education institutions like Ashworth College are popular among service members and their spouses because it is conducive to military lifestyle. Subject to frequent deployments, often at short notice, service members can't always be guaranteed that they will be able to complete a semester at a traditional brick and mortar school. Fortunately, online education is more convenient, allowing students to study where ever they are stationed. According to Leslie Gargiulo, Ph.D., Vice President of Education at Ashworth College, distance education programs like Ashworth's offer a seemingly unlimited opportunity to learn for anyone with a computer and access to the Internet. "Online programs are ideal for service members, giving them the flexibility they need to become successful students," said Dr. Gargiulo, referring to spouses being able to pause a program during relocation and the convenience of being able to study at home. "And because all of Ashworth's programs are nationally accredited and our instructors are working professionals, our students are assured to get the quality education they deserve." Dr. Gargiulo went on to explain that the Post 9/11 GI Bill is also beneficial to those who have already separated from active duty. "Not everyone is able to continue their education while enlisted. Because Ashworth offers a comparable accredited education, compared to similar schools our tuition is significantly less," she said. "Veterans can still pursue a degree with little to no out-of-pocket costs." About Ashworth College Ashworth College, a leader in online education, offers students worldwide more than 100 online college degrees, online career certificates, online career training and high school online diplomas that are affordable and fit the busy schedules of working adults.
