Shorter University has announced plans to launch its online Master of Arts in Teaching in early childhood education degree this fall.

The majority of the program requirements can be completed online with students coming to campus for an orientation and an additional seminar prior to student teaching. The program is designed for prospective students who have already earned an undergraduate degree.

"The School of Education, along with the university, has wanted this program for some time," said Sandra Leslie, dean of the School of Education. "It's a popular program, one that we are asked about frequently, so we are very proud of the fact that we will now be able to offer the MAT and offer it in a convenient online setting."

The student teaching and field placement requirements of the program will be conducted remotely through video sharing technology, Leslie explained.

Shorter University Provost Craig Shull believes the program will have a regional appeal for people seeking to build a career in the teaching profession.

"Part of Shorter's mission statement is to provide educational opportunities to individuals who are unable to attend traditional classes through geographically distant locations and online classes," he said. "By offering the MAT online, Shorter will be meeting the need of an entire region and furthering the advancement of a noble profession."

Baldwin-Wallace College will introduce an online, 13-month Mild/Moderate Intervention Specialist License in Education program.

The graduate-level program, which will begin in June, incorporates the same curriculum and faculty support as the traditional seated program but with the convenience of online study.

The program is designed for busy professionals facing demanding schedules, multiple responsibilities or long commutes. It includes nine online courses leading to a license. Students interested in pursuing degree completion can apply these courses toward a B-W Master of Arts in Education.

"This online license is another example of how the College is integrating the tradition of its well-established and successful education program with technology to meet the needs of today's educators," Karen Kaye, Ph.D, education division chairperson said. "Throughout northeast Ohio and beyond, B-W has been recognized as a leader in preparing K-12 teachers and administrators. It is a degree that is well respected and valued."

The online Mild/Moderate Intervention Specialist License program is for licensed teachers who have 12 hours of reading core, including a course in phonics. Successful completion of Praxis II is required for license eligibility in Mild/Moderate Needs.
