Sierra Nevada College and Capital Education Launch Online Adult Degree Completion Program Posted: 31 Jan 2011 04:09 PM PST Posted on: Monday, 31 January 2011, 13:22 CST INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev., Jan. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Sierra Nevada College today announced the college will offer a new online adult degree completion program in partnership with Capital Education, a full service provider of online learning platforms for colleges and universities. The program starts in February 2011 and will begin offering Bachelor of Arts degrees in business administration and psychology in the first term. The Sierra Nevada College (SNC) online adult degree completion program is designed to provide working adults a non-traditional opportunity to complete a degree to advance their career from a non-profit liberal arts college. Students can transfer credits from accredited community colleges and other post secondary schools and use them toward a four-year degree. It is ideal for students who desire the experience and community of a traditional campus, but need the flexibility of an online program in order to complete their degree at their own schedule. "Sierra Nevada College is excited to offer this excellent education opportunity for adults across the country," said Richard Rubsamen, President of Sierra Nevada College. "Students searching for a high quality academic experience with the flexibility to meet their needs will find success through our program." The program features a best in class online software platform that keeps students interacting with one another and with the class professor in team assignments, group discussions and casual chatting. Students will experience an interdisciplinary curriculum based on applied critical thinking skills (not just grades and paper assignments) that relates coursework to real-world problems. Students enrolled in the online program will benefit not only from SNC's experienced faculty who focus on active learning but also from the strong foundation of a liberal arts college with a solid reputation as a leading institution for sustainability, entrepreneurial thinking and professional preparation. Capital Education will work in partnership with Sierra Nevada College to deliver the program. "The decade of experience that Capital Education's team has in online course development and technology is unique," said John Olsen, President of Capital Education. "We are excited to support the development of Sierra Nevada College's online programs, enabling students to achieve success and helping Sierra Nevada College have a greater impact in higher education." SNC's Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration Online Adult Degree Completion Program provides students with an outstanding business and management education that will help them to perform more productively and professionally in their current work place, be positioned for higher levels of responsibility, or be ready to start a new career or even their own businesses. Graduates will be experts in team management, problem solving, and entrepreneurial thinking, and will be prepared to further their education through business graduate programs upon completion of this degree. SNC's Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Online Adult Degree Completion Program is ideally suited for working adults who wish to move on in careers involving any area of human interaction as well as a sophisticated understanding of the self, leading to several attractive options in counseling, management, human resources and welfare, and education. 3 Online Education Stocks to Study Posted: 31 Jan 2011 12:34 PM PST MINNEAPOLIS (Stockpickr) -- In the late 1990s, when it was out of fashion to be a value investor, was also when I knew value stocks would outperform the rest of the market by a wide margin. I was right. While I do consider myself a value investor, I much prefer to be called an opportunist. Socially, that may be unacceptable, but in the world of the stock market, there really is no other way to be. If you want to make big money owning stocks, it pays to buy what others are selling and sell what others are buying. One never knows when the next opportunity may arise -- you just need to keep searching. There are always contrarian plays to make somewhere. Market inefficiency pretty much guarantees that. Ultimately, on the long side, time heals all wounds, and suddenly what was out of favor becomes a shining star. The next great contrarian play could be taking place at this very moment in the online education space. Stocks in that group have fallen on hard times over the last year. The value destruction has been seen across the board. As a result, prices today may be attractive. Related: 3 Dolls of the Dow Stocks for 2011 Typically, I like the online education space at the end of a bull market or economic expansion. Educators do particularly well when unemployment is high. If it is tough to get a job, one of the most popular ways to improve the odds of being hired is to enhance one's resume with some sort of degree. Doing so online has become more affordable and accessible. The point is that these stocks are cyclical, but what does one do when presented with the selloff that we have seen of late? Are these stocks now value traps, or do they represent a contrarian opportunity for investors like me? Let's take a closer look at some of the bigger names in the group and find out. Apollo Group One of the pioneers in alternative education and a leader in the online education space, Apollo Group(APOL) was a shining star from 2007 to 2009. Not surprisingly, the company's fortunes changed at the bottom of the recession. Recovery in the economy led some to believe that profit growth at Apollo would falter. This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php |
Special education degree, endorsement available online Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:01 PM PST After babysitting a child with Down syndrome, postgraduate student Vy Nguyen was inspired to become a special education teacher. "They're constantly overlooked," she said. "They're constantly held at lower expectations, so they don't achieve as much as they can." More students now have access to special education degrees and endorsements because of a new online program offered at MSU. The university now offers a Master of Arts in Special Education online. Students can earn endorsements in either learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorders, or ASDs, the most widely available positions in the area of special education, said Cindy Okolo, professor and faculty coordinator of the special education master's program. The degree program allows students either to earn their master's degree, just an endorsement or both, she said. "There's been a really substantial increase in number of kids diagnosed (with) ASDs," Okolo said. "Learning disabilities is a high-demand area. In many places when we look at special education, learning disabilities is their largest category of kids who need special services." The Deaf Education Program recently was cut to reduce budget expenses, Okolo said. The stronger need for teachers with specializations in learning disabilities might have influenced the learning disabilities program's survival, she said. Whereas students with hearing disabilities are becoming integrated into general education, students with autism are becoming more Although students currently are taking online courses in the program, the endorsement in ASDs still is pending state approval. Plascencia said she is "99 percent sure that it will go through." "Even being a general education teacher, you're going to have an autism kid," she said. "No one's ever going to be able to avoid it." Offering the program online enables students who are teaching full-time to take these classes and earn their master's degree or an endorsement in their spare time, Okolo said. "These are courses taken mostly by full-time teachers," she said.
