Online Classes: Are They For You? Posted: 10 Aug 2010 12:30 PM PDT Online classes have their advantages and disadvantages. Boomers may be inspired to take advantage of these classes because they offer a convenient way for anyone to earn a degree, or just learn something new. As a result, they can be cheaper, as those that opt for online classes do not need to drive to school, nor live on campus. In fact, many top universities in the US have courses available online. However, many still prefer learning in actual classrooms, finding personal interaction more effective. Those that prefer classrooms may have an advantage. According to a recent study reported by Psych Central, online classes have limitations, particularly for low-achieving students, male students, and Hispanic students. These groups typically pursue online education versus in class instruction. David Figlio, a professor of education and social policy at Northwestern University said, "We did find modest evidence that live-only instruction results in higher learning outcomes than Internet instruction." The study used student volunteers, and randomly assigned them to classroom lecture and online lectures. There were a total 327 participants. While the study is not definitive, it does offer a means of comparison, says Figlio. Further studies are still required before it can be determined whether online classes are as effective as or less so than in classroom learning.
