âLa Francais est mortâ â“ French education on the chopping block as budgets are cut Posted: 08 Aug 2010 07:26 PM PDT By Debbie Glover Parlez-vous francais? Maybe, but beginning this fall, French will not be offered as a major at SLU. In June, the university requested permission of the Louisiana System Board of Supervisors to terminate its undergraduate degree programs in French and French education in order to meet reduced state budget allocations. Tammy Bourg, provost and vice president for academic affairs at SLU said at the time, "Considering Louisiana's rich history and cultural heritage, it is unfortunate that the state's budget situation has forced the proposed termination of these programs. We sincerely regret having to make this recommendation. While the budget situation requires us to make difficult decisions, we make those decisions cautiously to minimize potential negative impact on our students." In reaching the decision, a comprehensive review of all academic programs generated prioritization criteria and associated data, including number of majors, number of completers, student credit hour production, class load factors, program costs and impact on regional culture, workforce and economy.SLU President John Crain said, "The magnitude of budget challenges dictates that we reduce and in some cases eliminate community outreach programs as well as core academic programs." Crain recently stated that even with the passage this legislative session of the GRAD Act, which will allow the school to raise tuition by 10 percent in return for meeting performance goals, the university still faces financial challenges. Mandated cost increases of $3 million including fringe benefits, risk management premiums and utilities and reduction in the state appropriation of $1.7 million will more then use the additional tuition revenue of $4 million. Crain said that while the university faces economic challenges, "record numbers of academically well-prepared students continue to enroll at Southeastern, seeking an outstanding education and the resulting brighter future for themselves and their families. We remain steadfast in our commitment to their ultimate success." Public Information Director Rene Abadie said Wednesday that permission was granted and after next year, French and French education will no longer be offered as a major. Basic French courses, freshman and sophomore level, will still be offered, however.
