Reaching out this holiday season, the online degree search company plans to give over $1,000 in assistance to a single parent family in Utah.

Draper, Utah. (Vocus/PRWEB) December 20, 2010

Collecting monetary donations and gifts from employees for a struggling family living in Bountiful, Utah, DegreeSearch.org, an online education search company plans to spread some cheer this season.

"It's hard to make ends meet sometimes, especially if you're a single parent of five children, like the family we are helping. This family's finances are extremely tight, and while they're working hard to provide for themselves, we felt there was something we could do to help," said Chandler Horsley, CEO of DegreeSearch.org.

Though quite different from their usual business of assisting students in finding online associates, bachelor's and master's degree programs, the company is matching the value of all employee gifts given to the family.

"We're really hoping that together, we can provide over $1,000 to this family," said Horsley. "They are doing all they can, so we're going to do our best to make sure our donation makes a difference. We're letting our employees choose between purchasing gifts from a list or donating money to the cause. After we have compiled everything, DegreeSearch.org will match the donations so that we have something truly special to deliver on Christmas Eve."

GetEducated.com awards $1,000 online college scholarships to three distance learning students pursuing bachelor in business, online health, and MBA degrees. The winners of these free college grants have displayed excellence in online education at Indiana Wesleyan University, Dakota State University, and Baker College Online.

Burlington, Vermont (Vocus/PRWEB) December 20, 2010

GetEducated.com awards $1,000 Excellence in Online Education Scholarships to three distance learning students. These winners were chosen to receive online college grants based on their academic excellence and a 500-word essay, explaining the importance of a college degree.

GetEducated.com is the only consumer group in the U.S. dedicated to helping students rate, rank, and compare accredited online colleges and universities. Twice a year, the distance learning experts provide financial aid through GetEducated's $1,000 Online College Scholarship program.

Dayna Shong, 39, works as an inpatient coder at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and she will use the free distance learning scholarship to pursue a distance bachelor of science in health degree at Dakota State University.

"I decided to take the most difficult class I could find to prove myself during my first semester. I studied harder than I ever have in my life," explains Shong. "To this day, this is my favorite class. I found studying about anatomy, physiology, procedures, and vocabulary fascinating. I was hooked from day one."

Accreditation was the highest priority for Shong when choosing DSU to pursue higher education. The Health Information Administration program is fully accredited by the Regional Board for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Heather Ellison, 36, works as a restaurant manager in Rodney, Minnesota, while earning a master of business administration (MBA) at Baker College Online. She is also a winner of a GetEducated.com $1,000 distance learning scholarship award.

Ellison is a single mother working 50+ hours a week, so distance learning became the only option for her to achieve a higher education. After working in the restaurant industry since she was sixteen, Ellison now values the importance of a college degree.

She admits, "After a lot of self-examination, I realized that I really needed to make a change in my life and my career so that I can have a better quality of life for myself, and for my son."

In the future, Ellison hopes to enroll in online graduate classes and work toward a Master of Health Services Administration. She wants to show her son that it is never too late to follow one's dreams and build the courage to actively pursue them.

Rosa Morgan, 42, is a paraprofessional at Lebanon Middle School in Whitestown, Indiana. She will use the GetEducated.com free $1,000 online college scholarship toward an online Bachelors of Management at Indiana Wesleyan University.

At ten years old, Morgan moved to America from the Cape Verde Islands, located off the coast of Africa. School was challenging for Morgan, as she was placed in bi-lingual immersion classes. Without any prior experience speaking English, she struggled to keep up with her studies.

Now a single mother of four daughters, Morgan is motivated to excel in her studies and provide a bright future for her family. In 2006, she returned to school. In 2008, she graduated with an associate degree from Massasoit Community College in New York.

Morgan explains "It is difficult at times, but I know that education is one of the most important things in life, so I am determined to achieve my goals."

GetEducated.com will continue to offer free online college scholarships and grants to distance learning students in the spring and fall. The deadlines for these scholarship awards are March 15 and October 15.
