Capella University Launches 11 New Online Education Offerings

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 06:39 AM PDT

The accredited online university has expanded its offerings in the fields of education, public administration, public safety, business, health care, and psychology

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, today announced the launch of 11 new online educational offerings. They include a Reading and Literacy specialization within Capella's Doctor of Education (EdD) degree program, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Science (MS) in Public Safety joint degree program, and nine new degree enrichment options designed to expand the educational and career opportunities of its students. More than 38,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 31 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs and 47 percent enrolled in Capella's master's degree programs.

One of few online EdD Reading and Literacy specializations
Capella's new EdD Reading and Literacy specialization, designed around national standards, was developed to help meet the growing demand for leadership expertise in this field. Capella's offering is one of the few EdD Reading and Literacy specializations available online, making it accessible to a greater number of educators interested in becoming leaders in this field.

Joint degree program emphasizes multidisciplinary and collaborative skills
Many public issues require the ability to work effectively across sectors and professions to develop innovative solutions. Capella's Master of Public Administration (MPA)/MS in Public Safety joint degree program prepares public service professionals to meet those challenges across the public administration and public safety fields. The program also makes it possible to earn two complementary master's degrees—an MPA and an MS in Public Safety—in less time and at less cost than pursuing the two degree programs separately.

New degree enrichment options
Capella now offers its students a variety of ways to increase the value of their degree and expand their career options. Students can gain deeper expertise in a specific area by adding a concentration to their degree program or by pursuing multiple specializations within a degree program. Capella began offering concentrations in 2009 as an option available with certain degree programs and specializations. The newest concentrations, Health Policy and Management, and Public Policy Management and Collaborative Government, are an option with most Capella School of Public Service Leadership graduate degree programs. Multiple specializations are new to Capella; through this option, students who are enrolled in most bachelor's or master's degree programs that offer more than one specialization can choose to add additional specializations to deepen their knowledge in a particular area. Students can use their elective courses, if available, toward earning a concentration or second specialization, which can reduce the additional time and cost of pursuing concentrations or multiple specializations.

Capella's combined bachelor's/master's options provide students the opportunity to begin earning master's-level credits during their bachelor's program, which can save thousands of dollars and up to two quarter's time compared to pursuing the degrees separately. The newly announced combined bachelor's/master's options include:

  • Combined BS in Business-Health Care Management specialization/Master of Health Administration (MHA)
  • Combined BS in Business-Health Care Management specialization/Master of Public Health (MPH)
  • Combined BS/MS in Public Safety
  • Combined BS in Public Safety/Master of Public Administration (MPA)
  • Combined BS in Psychology/MS in Education
  • Combined Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA)/MPA option

Enrollment now open
Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for its EdD Reading and Literacy specialization and its MPA/MS in Public Safety joint degree program. Students must be currently enrolled to pursue concentrations, multiple specializations, or combined bachelor's/master's options. For more information, please call 1.888.CAPELLA (227.3552) or email info@capella.edu.

Review of the EdD Reading and Literacy specialization program is pending in AL, KS, ND, TN, and WA.
